What Counts as a Dental Emergency
This is one of the most common questions people have, and the honest answer is that if something feels urgent to you, it probably warrants a call. That said, certain situations are clear-cut emergencies that need attention as soon as possible.
These include:
- A knocked-out tooth, where time is critical for any chance of saving it
- A severe toothache that is throbbing, constant, or keeping you up at night
- A cracked or fractured tooth, especially if there is pain or sharp edges
- A lost crown or filling that is leaving a tooth exposed and sensitive
- A dental abscess, which can cause facial swelling, fever, and serious systemic risk if left untreated
- A broken tooth with bleeding that will not stop
- Soft tissue injuries inside the mouth that are significant or painful
Some of these are more urgent than others, but none of them are the kind of thing you want to sit on. Getting evaluated quickly gives us the best chance of saving the tooth and preventing a manageable problem from becoming much worse.
What to Do Before You Get to Us
First things first: call Mystic Smiles as soon as you realize something is wrong. Describing what happened and what you are experiencing helps us prepare for your arrival and advise you on any immediate steps to take.
In the meantime, here is what to do for some of the most common emergency situations:
- Knocked-out tooth: Handle it by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water, but do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket if you can, or keep it in a container of milk or between your cheek and gum. Get to us within thirty minutes if at all possible.
- Cracked or broken tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to manage swelling. Avoid chewing on that side.
- Lost crown or filling: If you still have the crown, keep it. In some cases, it can be re-cemented. Avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods until you are seen.
- Abscess or swelling: Do not try to pop or drain it yourself. Rinse with warm salt water and get in as soon as possible. Facial swelling spreading toward the eye or neck is a reason to go to an emergency room first.
- Toothache: Over-the-counter pain relievers can help temporarily manage discomfort. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum tissue, which can cause a chemical burn.
Why Waiting Makes Most Emergencies Worse
It is tempting to wait and see if the pain goes away on its own, and sometimes minor discomfort does settle down. But dental pain that is genuinely severe, or a cracked or infected tooth, rarely improves without treatment. What starts as a manageable crack can progress to a fracture that requires extraction. An infection that seems contained can spread quickly and become a medical emergency.
Emergency dentistry at Mystic Smiles in Carrollton is built on the understanding that faster care almost always means better outcomes and less invasive treatment. Getting seen promptly is not overreacting. It is the right call.
What Happens When You Come In
When you arrive for an emergency appointment, our first priority is to understand what is happening and get you out of pain. We will examine the affected area, obtain any necessary imaging, and provide you with a clear picture of what is happening and your options.
From there, the treatment depends on the situation. A knocked-out tooth may be re-implanted. A cracked tooth might need a crown. An abscess will need to be drained and treated, often with antibiotics and a follow-up procedure. A lost filling or crown can typically be addressed the same day. Dr. Nooruddin Pradhan and our team focus on resolving the immediate issue first, then discussing any follow-up care needed to fully restore the tooth.
